Arnhem has a very mixed housing stock, and that decides which milling method we use. The Spijkerkwartier, Klarendal, Sonsbeekkwartier and the streets around the Steenstraat have many pre-war townhouses and workers' homes. On the ground floor we usually find a later-poured sand-cement screed — ideal for milling — and wooden floors upstairs. We never mill into wood; there we fit Fermacell or Knauf boards and mill the pipes into those.

Presikhaaf, Malburgen, Elderveld, De Laar and Rijkerswoerd are full of 1960s–80s homes with a sand-cement screed on a concrete slab. That is the perfect situation for milling: neat channels, even heat distribution and not a centimetre of height lost. In the newer districts Schuytgraaf and Saksen Weimar we see more anhydrite (poured) screeds and apartments with concrete floors. We mill those too, with adapted blades and, in hard concrete, wet with water.

Many Arnhem residents choose milling because they are switching to a heat pump or want to get rid of radiators. With 16 mm pipe at 100 mm centres the floor works as primary heating at a low supply temperature — exactly what a heat pump needs.
